At Aflete, we love sharing incredible social influencers who inspire others to stay active & healthy. We wanted to share Jules’ story from the inspiring yoga + lifestyle blog, Om & The City – She is a blogger & yoga instructor based in New York City and inspires you to be the fiercest, happiest & healthiest version of yourself every day.
Can you tell us a little about yourself and what you do for anyone who hasn’t come across your Instagram / Facebook before?
Hi! I’m Jules – I am a yoga + lifestyle blogger (@omandthecity). I’ve been blogging for almost 3 years, and I love connecting with other wellness, spirit & yoga lovers like me! I am also a certified yoga instructor & I head up social media for a tech startup in NYC!
You have mentioned in your blog your battles with depression and an eating disorder, how did you overcome this and be positive?
It definitely took a few years for me to really get over… and even still, I sometimes find myself getting caught up in my head over food. Once I started practising yoga, my relationship with food and my own body changed. Instead of obsessing over food, I became obsessed with yoga and the way it made me feel from the inside out. I think of food as fuel, nourishment, medicine and something that brings people together.
How often do you do Yoga and what advice would you give for beginners?
Ooh! I wish I had time to practice more often! I practice yoga about 3-4 times a week whether it is in a studio or in my home. I try to wake up and do a gentle flow before I head to work in the morning, and love to close out weeks with a sweaty yoga sesh. My advice to beginners is to be patient! Yoga isn’t about how flexible you are – it’s about the journey! Really appreciate the progress you are making and the small victories along the way.
When did you start using social media for fitness, how has it helped you? (in terms of being inspired by other people’s diets, or getting inspiration and advice on training and exercises when you started Yoga)
I only started taking Instagram seriously when I realised I needed it to promote my blog. If it were up to me, I would just write all day every day, and not have to worry so much about Instagram. BUT, I love how Instagram has allowed me to micro-blog from captions and to connect with so many beautiful, kind and like-minded individuals! It definitely helps me get inspired when I see photos of beautiful fruity creations and other fitness journeys. The internet is an endless source of inspiration… but it can also drain you, so everything in moderation. 🙂
What is your personal philosophy on food and fitness?
Food: Eat as close to the earth as possible. I do my best to eat clean, unprocessed and natural foods. Of course, I do eat my fair share of dark chocolate and ice cream… balance, balance, balance! Fitness: Do what makes you feel SO good on the inside that you forget what you look like on the outside. Basically, exercise to feel good internally and the external will follow naturally.
What is a typical eating day like? (how many meals / how many snacks etc)
I typically eat 5 small meals a day. Every day is different – I’m a New Yorker, so I actually do eat out a lot. Thought, it’s usually healthy choices. Breakfast:Coffee + Plain greek yogurt with berries & granola OR a big green smoothie with matcha, pineapple, spinach, banana, Snack 1: Trail mix (peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, organic dried blueberries, and dark chocolate), Lunch: From Smile Cafe, I typically get a kale salad with a side of quinoa, Snack 2:Pears with cinnamon (my fave) or apple with almond butter, Dinner: Free for all… could be tacos or sushi! Dessert: A handful of dark chocolate chips in my favorite little tea cup … this is a ritual haha
