Why Should I Swap My Delicious Snacks For Healthy Snacks?

As our diets progressively deteriorate in the Western world at Aflete we are fighting against the trend. We want to show you that you can beat the unhealthy food industry at its own game and by swapping out some less nutritious ingredients for healthy food. You may have already heard of courgetti – the low carb vegetable version of pasta, but have you tried some of the others on this list?

1. Cauliflower rice instead of white rice

Simply cut off the cauliflower florets and blitz in bursts in a food processor to create a rice-like texture. Steam the riced cauliflower in a microwave or pan-fry with veggies and scrambled egg for a healthier take on stir-fried rice.

2. Avocado instead of mayonnaise

Smash up an avocado with a pinch of salt and pepper for a great alternative to mayonnaise. Mix up with tuna for a tasty tuna ‘mayo’ sandwich full of healthy fats and protein.

3. Rice paper rolls instead of wraps

Vietnamese rice paper rolls can be found in Asian supermarkets and are well worth the search. Soaked in water and wrapped around delicious fillings makes a low carb, gluten free version of your usual lunchtime wrap.

4. Greek yogurt instead of cream

Although there is no real substitute for a really indulgent dessert topped with whipped cream you can replace cream with greek yogurt in some dishes, particularly savoury ones. Try making a beef or mushroom stroganoff with greek yogurt added at the end and cut down on your saturated fat for the day.

5. Sweet potato instead of white potato

Everyone should be eating sweet potato (not least because it tastes fantastic) and leaving white potatoes by the wayside. Sweet potatoes are full of nutrients and vitamins and work just as well as the normal variety when roasted in wedges with a sprinkling of spices.

6. Almond milk instead of cow’s milk

If you want to cut calories then almond milk is the way to go. At only 60 calories per glass almond milk is a great way to save on your daily calorie intake. Try almond milk in your smoothies for a creamy texture that is low in fat.
